June News

Pick one; rain, snow, sleet, hail, 96 degrees, 37 degrees…never mind, pick them all and you’d have the weather in June in Central Oregon. What a month around here. It sure kept us on our toes that’s for sure. We didn’t get that much measurable rain but it was dreary enough long enough for feel like a lot of rain…and that brought out MUSHROOMS. We had lots of calls and e-mails about the mushrooms in the lawns. They are quite harmless and as soon as the sun came out for a few days in a row they will disappear.

A quick note on “skipping” mows. This is a practice we use frequently use in June & July (and occasionally other months) to give the grass an extra week to grow between cuts. This extra 7 days allows some weak areas to get longer and thereby improving the health of the grass pretty quickly. It may look a bit rough for a week but our patience will be rewarded with a better looking and HEALTHIER lawn the following week.

For some of the newer lawns and also some with some feeding issues we’ll make a mid-season fertilizer application in July. This will really give a boost to those that need it and accelerate the switch to organics for the new lawns.

We’ve been making some little improvements at many properties over the past 4 weeks and would like to progress along that line by introducing any of you that may be looking to get some masonry work done to Joey Boisineau (541-788-3330) of Boisineau Masonry. He’s been around Central Oregon for many years and does work for several of our clients. Paver walkways, driveways patios as well as retaining walls, fireplaces, and veneer work. Give Joey or myself a call if you’ve got some ideas or want to learn more.

As many of you know I’ve been involved with the J Bar J Youth Services for many years (16 now) and we’re proud to host the High Desert Classic Horse show this month from the 18th thru the 30th and the J Bar J Boys Ranch on Hamby. It’s a free event and runs all day from 7am to 6pm or later with big events on the weekends with $25,000 prize money both Saturday evenings.

We are currently seeking interested persons to increase our Board of Directors. This is an extremely well run organization with a five million dollar annual budget and over 100 employees helping hundreds of at risk youth all throughout the populations of Deschutes, Crook & Jefferson counties. Big Brothers Big Sisters, the Loft transitional living facility and Cascade Youth and Family Center to name a few programs.

Please call me or e-mail if you’d like more info.

Thanks for an exciting month and your continued support.
